Shania Middleton took part in the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program on the campus of Centre College in Danville.

The Governor’s Scholars Program was truly a life-changing experience. Even though GSP was filled with fun moments, it is so much more than your typical “fun” summer camp.

To be in the same environment with other people who are also incredibly passionate about learning and making a difference in the world is truly inspiring. The emphasis on community and collaboration is something I know will have a lifelong impact on me.

At GSP, you wake up everyday for five weeks to a community full of encouragers. No dream is too big and no idea is too small. You are encouraged to be brave, to be courageous, and to share your ideas.

In this world we should strive to be difference makers and that is not done by keeping silent. In each of my classes at GSP, I was challenged and provoked to speak up and think deeply. I was encouraged to ponder on ideas and concepts of life that are often challenging and even sometimes controversial to discuss and think about.

In the words of Governor Andy Beshear, “You are not just young leaders, you are leaders.” GSP encouraged and strengthened my leadership skills. I learned to be vocal about what is important, and to never stop pursuing my passions and goals.

While GSP is known for its academic prestige and the classes are nothing short of remarkable, one of the best parts is by far the people. At GSP I made friends and formed mentorships that I know I will carry with me throughout life. The shared experiences, diverse backgrounds, and similar aspirations of the GSP community created an environment ideal for personal growth and lasting friendships.

The bonds made at GSP are unlike any other. Everyone pushes the other to be their best and achieve their highest potential. The kind of bonds you build at GSP are truly life-altering. It’s something that is truly unique.

GSP changed my life, tremendously for the better. I am so grateful to have the honor of now being a GSP alumna. It’s an experience like no other.

(The Governor’s Scholars Program is a summer residential program for outstanding high school students in Kentucky who are rising seniors. The Program originated in 1983 as a result of Kentucky leaders’ concern that the state’s “best and brightest” were leaving the Commonwealth to pursue educational and career opportunities elsewhere without fully understanding the potential of their talents at home. Students who are selected attend the Program without charge. In the spirit of partnership, the Office of the Governor, the Kentucky State Legislature, and private enterprise come together to provide the financial support for the Program.

The Program’s mission is to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders. The first class numbered 230 and was housed on one college campus. Since then, the Program has enjoyed excellent support and grown to over 1,000 students on three campuses. The core curriculum for these summer sessions is threefold:

  • Focus Area: Courses that allow a student to pursue a topic in-depth as a member of a small group stressing the development of ideas in the chosen discipline, with the option of additional independent study.

  • General Studies: Classes the emphasize inquiry, service-learning, community leadership, and resolution development.

  • Leadership Seminar: Personal development seminars that stress concerns and problems faced by students, including such subjects as values clarification, career choice, and interpersonal relationships."
