
March Madness recap: The LEGO build/ TSA afterschool program.
The after school program starts in the lunchroom
with an afterschool snack, and then moves into the library until 4:30. This program provides students with the opportunity to enhance their reading skillls, problem-solving abilities, fosters teamwork, boosts confidence and encourages a love of learning.
Transportation is available to some locations if needed, and permission slips need to be turned into Mrs. Bailey if your child wants to attend.











JACES March Madness recap: LEGO Brick Group partnered with JACES for STEM education and family engagement March 7 &17th.
JACES had an incredible opportunity to partner with the LEGO Brick Group for a hands-on STEM experience! This educational event provided guided LEGO build classes that were designed to align with primary and middle school math concepts. These learning sessions encouraged problem solving, creativity and teamwork!
In addition to the classroom sessions, LEGO Brick group hosted a 2-hr Open Build session for family engagement. Offering families an opportunity to participate in creative and educational activities together.











Paraprofessional Appreciation Day is a day for our AMAZING James A. Cawood Elementary support staff to get recognition and appreciation for their integral roles in the education of students. Thank you for your efforts and consistently going above and beyond!!


Today was a great day to be with “Cool Pete the Cat”at the Barter Theatre! PRI partnered with teachers to take our Kindergarten students to see the play Pete the Cat! They have read quite a bit about him this year. To see the play in action brought the character to life for most of them. A lot of fun was had by all & happy memories made. ❤️🖤🩵











4th-8th grade students going on the JACES Gifted and Talented trip tomorrow, Tuesday, April 1st will need to meet in the JACES cafeteria at 7:05. The bus will be leaving at 7:15. A to go breakfast will be provided. Please do not be late.

Our JACES Archery CHAMPIONS! 🏹🏆











Congratulations to the JACES Trojan Archery Team for winning the county championship last night with a Top 10 score of 2490 points. 🏆🏹 Angel Gross received the 3rd place female honor in the Championship. Several shot their personal best last night. We are super proud of these kids as they have worked extremely hard all season to get this win! ❤️🖤🩵

We are excited to announce the opening of our Harlan County Child Development Center. Our center is housed at James A. Cawood Elementary School. and will provide an exciting educational opportunity for four-year old students. The center opens August 2025. We will share the application process by April 1.


Board of Education approves 2025-2026 School Calendar.


The Harlan County Board of Education revised the school calendar to utilize Monday, February 17th, as a make up day. This was previously designated for no school on Presidents’ Day.
All schools will be in session on Monday, February 17th.

The Harlan County Board of Education believes schools are strengthened when all stakeholders are actively engaged in the education process.
Our Board of Education would like your feedback for a school calendar which supports maximizing consistent instructional time for students, opportunities for professional growth for teachers and increasing student achievement.

The Harlan County Middle School Cheer Competition will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at Harlan County High School. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for the public.
Admission is $3. Concessions will be available.
Squads competing are Black Mountain, Cawood, Cumberland, Evarts, James A. Cawood, Rosspoint and Wallins.
Due to an overwhelming response to the competition, we have had to make some adjustments to be sure that we can accommodate the crowd.
We will be utilizing both sides of the gym as opposed to our traditional use of the home side only.
Evarts, Black Mountain, Rosspoint and Cumberland fans should sit on the home side.
Cawood, Wallins and James A. Cawood fans should sit on the visitor’s side.
Cheer squads are judged on a sideline cheer, floor cheer and pom routine. An award will be presented for crowd participation and sportsmanship.
Cheerleaders making honor roll will be recognized for their academic achievement.
This is the eighth year for the competition which funds the Frank Brittain Academic and Athletic Hall of Fame for Harlan County Schools.
