Safe Schools Week underway.

Kentucky Safe Schools Week began today and continues through September 12th.

This week aims to “Focus on School Safety”. This year’s theme emphasizes the critical need for constant vigilance and proactive measures in maintaining secure learning environments across the Commonwealth.

Harlan County Schools Chief of Police Matt Cope said, “Kentucky Safe Schools Week is more than just an event—it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to create a safe and supportive learning environment. School safety is everyone’s business, and it requires commitment from our students, faculty, staff, and community members working together.”

Cope noted that collaborations are vital when it comes to keeping student safe each day.

“By taking this initiative seriously, we build not only safer schools, but also stronger relationships and trust across our district. When everyone does their part, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed in a secure environment,” he said.

This dedicated week aims to empower schools to strengthen their safety initiatives through targeted activities and discussions. The goal is to raise awareness about various aspects of school safety and empower students, teachers, parents, and the wider community to take proactive steps in creating a safe and nurturing learning environment for everyone.

Join us and participate in this year’s campaign to “Focus on School Safety” in your school, home and community. Take the online “Focus on School Safety” pledge.

I pledge to "Focus on School Safety":

I will “frame the positive” by showing respect, kindness, and acceptance to others.

I will “zoom in on kindness” and stand against bullying behaviors in all forms.

I will “adjust my focus” by staying alert and reporting anything that doesn’t seem right.

I will “capture responsibility” by owning my actions and following school rules.

I will “develop the full picture” by working with others to build a safe, supportive

school community.
