Announcements November 3rd 2025
• Congratulations to our Girls Cross Country Team for placing fourth in the Class AA State Championship. That is three straight top FOUR finishes at the state meet.
• Harlan County Boys placed 13th in the Class AA State Cross Country Championship. They've placed in the top 15 for the last 6 years!
• Our Cheerleaders are State bound as well after this weekend’s Regional Competition
• The HCHS Academic Team took 3rd place overall in JV Challenge this
weekend with several placing in their tested areas.
• Grayson Short - 3rd place in Mathematics and 2nd place in Science
• Marianna Bennett - 4th place in Science
• Jack Eld - 2nd place in composition
• Skylar Rutherford - 4th place composition
• FFA Officers will be having a meeting on Tuesday November 4th at 2:45 PM in Room 206.
• The CTE Department is working with Funds2Org on a shoe drive. We are asking the people bring in shoes, sandals, boots, cleats, anything but roller skates to donate. Our department will then bag the shoes and they will be picked up from the school before Christmas Break.
All these donations will be sent to under-privileged countries. The shoes that need repairs will be mended and the shoes will be donated to inspiring entrepreneurs in those countries to sell.
• Students: Bus notes must be turned into the front office in the morning, no later than the beginning of third period. Preferably, all bus notes should be turned in upon your arrival here at HCHS. All bus notes must be verified by office staff, turning these in late makes this process very difficult and could result in your note not being approved.
• Seniors have the opportunity to attend the Southeast Regional College Day at the Cumberland campus of SKCTC on Wednesday, November 12th. We will leave the school at approximately 8:30 am and return by 12:30 pm. Southeast will provide lunch to those who attend. Senior English teachers have permission slips. Completed slips must be turned into Mrs. Megan Carruba or Mrs. Cathy York by no later than Friday, November 7th.

There will be a meeting on Monday, October 27th during 6th period in the cafeteria for all students who are interested in joining Beta Club. The deadline for Beta Club dues is October 31st.
Mrs. Mitchell's 10th grade English classes participate in Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) each week. SSR offers multiple benefits like improved reading comprehension and increased reading stamina/fluency while encouraging a greater love for reading. Students pick a book of their choice, get comfortable, and read silently until the timer goes off.


The next Alive at 25 class is Monday, October 27th at Harlan Independent High School. The class begins at 4:00pm.

Mrs. Mitchell's sophomore English classes examined author Edgar Allan Poe's perspective by matching his personal experiences and life events with the different stories and poems he wrote and reflecting on the connections they made.






Harlan County High School’s open house will be on Wednesday October 8th, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Mid-term reports will be available.
Teachers will be available in their classrooms for parents to visit and check student progress.
In addition, the Harlan County School Food Services has a unique opportunity for participants at this event.
Those attending will be able to visit the school cafeteria and sample various food items which are served to students.
The items will include Polo Black Bear and other favorites. You don't want to miss sampling these foods.
Visitors will also see numerous upgrades recently made to the cafeteria and serving lines.
PUBLIC FORUM ON FACILITIES SLATED OCT. 20
The Harlan County Schools Local Planning Committee will conduct an LPC Meeting on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the Harlan County Board of Education Central Office at 5:00 p.m. The office is located at 251 Ball Park Road, Harlan.
Immediately after, the Local Planning Committee will convene a Public Forum at 6:30 p.m. to solicit public comment on the proposed District Facilities Plan.
The Local Planning Committee Meeting and Public Forum are scheduled in accordance with KRS 157.620 and regulated by 702 KAR 1:001.
